National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA)

The implementation of NREGA is
from 2nd February 2006
-
100 Days of Work in Rural areas
becomes a Legal Right
-
Rural Households in the notified
districts can now exercise various rights under the act:

The right to demand employment
-
The right to get employment
within 15 days of their demand
-
The right to get unemployment
allowance if the employment is not given within 15 days
-
The right to be paid statutory
wages prevalent in a State
-
The right to worksite
facilities like drinking water, sheds for children and first aid
Salient Features of NREGA:
-
NREGA is not just a scheme but
an Act providing legal guarantee to work.

Panchayati Raj institutions (PRIs)
will have principal role in planning and implementation
-
Transparency, accountability,
social audit and people’s participation will be ensured through
institutional mechanism.
-
Grievance redressal mechanism
will be put in place.
-
One third beneficiaries will
be women.
-
Any adult person in the
notified area willing to do unskilled manual work, can apply for
registration with Gram
Panchayat. He/she will then be issued a
job card.
-
The card is the legal
instrument that will entitle the registered person to apply for employment
under the Act.
-
Registration will be open
throughout the year.
-
Employment will be given
within 5 km. of the applicant’s residence, else additional wages will be
paid.
