Setting Up School For Rural Children

AID - Jharkhand (Palamau Chapter)

With the dismal scenario of education prevailing in Palamau distirct of Jharkhand, on one hand the children are deprived of schools. On the other hand even the present and coming generation of children will be deprived of basics of education and they will swell the ranks of child labour.

To ensure that the basic education of children becomes their right and access to quality education is made available AID have set up 11 formal schools with infrastructure and all basic amenities in very remote rural pockets of the district.

The regular schools of AID are attempting to bridge the gap that is existing due to non-functional government schools. This is also leading to children being employed in forest based and agricultural based activities. These regular schools also aim to curtail the present generation of children from getting into employment and bondage. The regular attendance in the school will ensure they are kept from these activities.

The enrolement of girl children and their retention is also one of the prime activities in the school. Lest due to the practice of child marriage in the region, the girl children are never given the
opportunity to attend schools and study.

The rural children are exposed to the modern teaching methods and curriculum. It is trying to provide the right ambience for education on par with the good schools in the region.

The response to this initiative is encouraging though time and again parents get tempted to employ their children in suitable vocations to earn additional income for the family. But constant motivation and quality education is paving way for good education in the region.

The special feature of these schools are that these schools are run by the community. They created their own management committee to run the school. They are contributing part of the cost of the school. All the decisions were taken by them. These schools provided continuous education services unlike the government schools which
are mostly dis-functional. In some villages, the work of the school further created a healthy competition in the area. 5400 children are benifitting due to this initiative.

ACTION FOR CONSTRUCTION OF SCHOOL BUILDING FOR TRIBAL AND DALIT CHILDREN

Previously, not only was there a lack of basic education, there was no atmosphere suitable for conducting educational classes in the region. Most often the educational classes are conducted under the trees or in ill-ventilated village homes which are used in the morning for running the centres and in the evening to tie up the domestic animals. The cramped atmosphere and lack of ventilation made the children undergo a lot of hardships in concentrating on their lessons.

This year, 41 school buildings have been made in the regions of Palamau and Garwah to create an atmosphere to education.
