AID - Jharkhand

Literacy has been one of the thrust areas of AID-Jharkhand. Jharkhand is one of the low ranking region in literacy levels (ranging as low as 5% - 15%) Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java(tm).

The literacy programs were tuned in such a manner that it could equip the community with the right to information concerning their social, economical, cultural and political information. This enabled them to analyse their situation. With the wide spread literacy programs in the region there have been several success stories.

The literacy programs enabled around 5053 familes to obtain the ration cards and the subsidised food grains which were otherwise sold by the Public distribution centres to outsiders for higher price.

Around 295 bonded families were able to extricate themselves from the bondage and also ensure their family members are not brought into the vicious circle.

The members of the community were able to present memorandums to appropriate authorities for any shortcomings in their villages.

The quarrying in the villages could be stopped due to the successful community effort and their combined strength to fight against the forces of exploitation.

The labour contracts were oral and most often were violated by the landlords. The literacy centres changed the situation. Many learners who were working for the landlords, joined hands and refused to give free labour unless minimum wages were paid to them.

650 Adult education centres catering to around 19500 people have been run in the region.

Literacy in villages served as a forum to analyse, plan and to act together with greater solidarity to solve the individual and the community problem.
