In Palamau
district of jhakhand there are hundreds of government schools but paying
lip service to education. These schools are ghost schools existing only on
the papers. Deprived of infrastructure,
teachers the children are
literally left to while away their time or engage themselves in work.
There have been instances in the Lesliganj and Panki blocks of Palamau
district - certain schools have been closed for around 13 years but yet
they are under the active pay role of the district administration. The
government school teachers turn out to be good money lenders in the
villages. On the one hand they get handsome returns from the government
with no work. On the other end they carry forward their agricultural work
at home doing great disservice to the student community. In most of the
villages it is only creating history if anybody is passing out
successfully the school finals from the government schools. This is the
pathetic status of the government schools.
In these circumstances AID has set up supplementary education centres in
20 villages to cater to the needs of the children who are attending the
government schools.
The supplementary schools are tuned to provide the right atmosphere and
quality education among the children who are attending the government
schools. Special classes are run for the children after school hours to
give them extra coaching.
The major constraint has been in the centres where the government schools
are totally not functioning. It paramount to running a school in totality
and not just supplementary education as the onerous responsibility falls
on the supplementary centre to equip the children with strong and proper
foundation.
Indeed, an educational revolution is taking place in Palamau district
where for so long children have been deprived of basic education.
The impact of these schools is that in many villages, the villagers are
now questioning the teachers who are irregular in their work. In some
villages, they took up the matter with school authorities. These are all
the new changes created by the project in the area. The people in the area
are now asserting their right to education to the government.
7000 children are directly benefitting out of this initiative.
