The tribals
in Singhbhum district of Jharkhandare predominantly dependent on the
forest produce. Women and girl children are involved in collecting forest
produce throughout the seasons in the year. The girl children are also
responsible for taking care of their siblings and for domestication. Due
to these reasons they are not participating in schools and are deprived of
basic edcuation. In this scenario AID has started 20 special schools for
girl children
in the region.
These special schools are catering not only to the basic educational needs
of the girl children but are also focussing on their health and hygiene.
The schools are made flexible so that they can attend the schools
regularly according to their convenience.
Around 744 children have enrolled in these centres. It has been possible
due to the motivation given to the parents to enable their girl children
to attend the schools. Now atleast these children a enable to get some
respite from their regular work and are able to read and write.
The impact of the programmes are known from the increased awareness about
the deep rooted discriminatory practices on the basis of gender
difference. It further helped them to know their problems. Many of their
health improved as a result of the work. The parents are also empowered to
deal with their problems by them.
