Drinking Water For Community

AID - Jharkhand

Unsafe drinking water is the main source of water borne diseases. In the rural areas getting safe drinking water is always problematic. The main source of their drinking water is that collected in the ponds and ditches during the monsoon. Bore-wells are not located in all the regions and even when they are they tend to be located in the upper caste regions making access to drinking water for the poor impossible. In these circumstances women and the girl children have the responsible to bring water

AID ensures that safe drinking water is made available to the majority of the community by enabling the community to choose the place where the borewell/well should be located. Using indigenous techniques the availability of water in the region is assessed. With the participation of the village community drinking water wells are being dug in the region. This year 329 drinking water wells have been provided, out of which 11 bore-wells have been exclusively provided for the organisational Schools.

These works contributed to reduced work burden among women, release of girls for schools and reduction of diseases in many villages.

Jhati Jharna in East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand is entirely cut off from the mainstream. The remote inaccessible tribal hamlet is dotted by forest and elephant habitates. This region has no roads and way has to be freshly paved to reach the site. In these circumstances no government officials ever visited the region. Development programs of any kind had not reached the region. Though the village is 25 kms from the main town, it takes atleast 4 hours time to reach the village due to the hilly undulated terrain and lack of roads. One of the major issues in the region was lack of drinking water.

Two drinking water wells catering to the needs of 670 households in the region have been constructed. This is a great boon to the community. In the absence of communicable roads and constant attack by the elephants on the village, fetching water is a great problem. Now this is successfully addressed through the construction of the drinking water wells in the region
